2026 JJIF World Championship – Why the Host Country Changed

| News

The 2026 World Championship was originally planned to be held in Ostia, Italy, in October. During the preparation period, the Italian Local Organising Committee informed JJIF that they were not able to proceed with hosting the Championship as originally planned.

At that point, JJIF had to consider how to ensure that the World Championship could still take place in 2026. The situation was discussed within the JJIF Board together with the Continental Presidents, with the priority being to find a realistic and responsible solution.

The UAE team then offered the possibility of hosting the Championship in August, which was compatible with their existing calendar and organisational preparations. At that time, this was the available solution that allowed JJIF to maintain the World Championship within the 2026 calendar.

The decision was therefore made to move the Championship to the UAE.

This was not a decision made against Italy, nor was it a judgement on the Italian team or the work they had already done. Hosting an international championship involves many factors, and circumstances can change during the preparation process. When the original host was no longer able to proceed, JJIF had a responsibility to act and secure an alternative.

We also understand that the timing of the decision and other changes surrounding the 2026 Championship have generated discussion. We welcome legitimate questions about decisions taken by JJIF, and we believe that these questions are best answered by explaining the actual circumstances rather than through assumptions or speculation.

The UAE stepped forward when JJIF needed an available host, and the Championship was successfully delivered. At the same time, JJIF recognises the work and commitment that the Italian team had put into the original preparation.

Our decisions are ultimately guided by the responsibility to protect the World Championship, provide athletes with a high-level international competition, and ensure continuity for the JJIF community.

We hope this clarification provides useful context for those who have asked why the Championship moved from Italy to the UAE.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the 2026 JJIF World Championship and, most importantly, to the athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and national federations who continue to build our sport together.
